Construction Materials kg to Litre Conversion Chart

In civil engineering, general contracting, and masonry, building supplies are quoted and delivered by the tonne or kilogram (mass), but excavations, formwork pours, and trenches are measured in cubic metres (m³) and fluid litres (L).

Note that in metric measurement:

  • 1 Cubic Metre (m³) = 1,000 Litres (L)
  • 1 Litre (L) = 0.001 Cubic Metres (m³)

3. Contractor Site Formulas: Estimating Tonnages from Dimensions

Step 1: Calculate Void Volume in Cubic Metres

Volume (m³) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (m)

Step 2: Convert Volume to Litres

Volume in Litres = Volume (m³) × 1,000

Step 3: Calculate Required Mass in Metric Tonnes

Mass in Tonnes (t) = Volume (m³) × Bulk Density (t/m³ or kg/L)


Practical Contractor Example: Ordering Gravel for a Trench

  • Trench Dimensions: 15 metres long, 0.8 metres wide, 0.2 metres deep.
  • Gravel Bulk Density: 1.55 t/m³ (1.55 kg/L).
  • Calculation:
    1. Volume = 15m × 0.8m × 0.2m = 2.4 m³ (2,400 Litres).
    2. Mass = 2.4 m³ × 1.55 t/m³ = 3.72 Metric Tonnes (3,720 kg).
    3. Adding a 10% compaction & wastage buffer: 3.72 t × 1.10 = 4.09 Tonnes.
  • Result: Order 4.1 tonnes (or approx. 5 bulk bags of 850kg) of crushed stone.

4. Why Bulk Density Varies on Construction Sites

  1. Moisture Bulking: Dry sand bulks in volume by up to 25% when slightly damp (5% moisture) due to surface tension holding grains apart. When fully saturated, it settles tightly again.
  2. Mechanical Compaction: Loose aggregates settle by 15% to 30% after roller or plate compactor passes, increasing density per m³.
  3. Aggregate Grading: Blended well-graded aggregates (where small particles fill the voids between large stones) are significantly denser than single-size gravels.
