3. How to Calculate Diesel Mass and Volume
The Standard Formulas:
Volume in Litres (L) = Mass (kg) ÷ Density (kg/L)
Mass in Kilograms (kg) = Volume (L) × Density (kg/L)
Practical Example: Bunkering 12.5 Metric Tonnes of Diesel
- Convert tonnes to kg:
12.5 t × 1,000 = 12,500 kg - Apply density formula:
12,500 kg ÷ 0.832 kg/L = 15,024.04 Litres - Result: A 12.5-tonne delivery requires 15,024 litres of storage tank capacity.

5. Effect of Temperature on Fuel Volume (ASTM D1298)
Liquid hydrocarbons expand with heat. A mass of diesel that occupies 1,000 litres at a winter temperature of 0°C will expand to over 1,025 litres at 35°C, even though the physical mass remains identical:
